Leire Pajín Iraola

Leire Pajín Iraola is Secretary of State for International Cooperation in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Spain and also Chief of the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation. Elected Deputy for Alicante in 2000 and 2004, she has served as President of the non-governmental organization Solidarity International and as a Board member of the Jaime Vera Foundation. Ms. Pajín Iraola has also been a member of the faculty and of the Board of the Faculty of Economics and Sociology at the University of Alicante.

There has been too little progress towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). At present, 40 per cent of the world's population is living below the minimum sanitation threshold, two thirds of all illiterate people are women and over 65 per cent of the people affected by HIV/AIDS live in Africa.
