José Luis Machinea

José Luis Machinea is the Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). He served as Argentina's Minister of the Economy from 1999 to 2001 and as President of the Central Bank of Argentina. Mr. Machinea has had a distinguished career in the public and private sectors, among them as President of the Argentine Foundation for Development with Equity and as a consultant to the Inter-American Development Bank and the World Bank.

There is no doubt that Latin America is on track to meeting its commitment to halve the 1990 extreme poverty rate by the 2015 target deadline. The most recent estimates by the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) show that some 14 million Latin Americans escaped from poverty in 2006 and another 10 million are no longer destitute.
