Helen Clark

The Honourable Helen Clark has been Prime Minister of New Zealand since November 1999, the culmination of her long involvement with the Labour Party, which she joined in 1971. She was elected to the Cabinet in 1987 and held a number of ministerial portfolios (conservation, housing, labour and health). Ms. Clark was elected Leader of the Labour Party in 1993 and also served as Leader of the Opposition.

The issues of sustainability, particularly climate change and clean energy, as well as energy security and access, are compelling concerns of our times. Through the issues raised by climate change, the goal of sustainable development has been given a tangible core and a renewed sense of urgency.
